The History of Cupcakes
1796 The first ever cupcake recipe written is found in "American Cookery" by Amelia Simms. It exists of half a pound of sugar, half a pound of butter rubbed into two pounds of flour, one glass wine, one glass of rosewater, two glasses of emptins, nutmeg, cinnamon and currants to create a light cake to bake in small cupcakes.
Originally cupcakes were called "number cakes"or "1234 cakes" because this way it was easier to remember the portions, one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, four eggs, one cup of milk and one spoonful of soda. Usually cupcakes were flavoured with dried fruit or spices, they were not originally frosted. In comparison to other cakes they were much faster to cook.
1919 Cupcakes's popularity increased in big numbers when Hostess began mass producing them.
1950's Cupakes are now as we know them today. Delicious, cream-filled and frosted. This was after D.R. (Doc Rice) was given the job to redesign them in 1947
2000's The Magnolia Bakery in New York is featured in Sex and the City. More popularity is gained and cupcakes become a real trend.
